‘Youth Disaster’ is the first song from the artist’s upcoming EP, dropping this year.
With HANDSOME, you come for the dance floor bangers and stay for the feels as she relishes in the freedom of gender fluidity and embraces the beauty in androgyny.
Back in 2019, HANDSOME released the ‘No Hat No Play’ EP – an exploration of identity and empowerment, which continues to be an integral part of her creative pieces. ‘Youth Disaster’ is a moody bop layered with vocal samples and inspired by the Japanese fashion trend ‘Yami Kawaii’ (sick cute) seeing younger generations express struggles with depression and mental illness in a grotesque yet unique way.
The video for ‘Youth Disaster’ continues HANDSOME’s themes of togetherness – there’s a group of friends holding their gaze on the camera as if to challenge the viewer. It addresses the monsters which we can become through the monotony of social media use.
‘Youth Disaster’ is out now.
