Roz Dickson has been married to her partner Kathy for 28 years and was previously required not to be married for her birth certificate to reflect her gender. The laws outlining this have now been amended which means the restrictions have been removed.

Roz had gender reassignment surgery completed two years ago.

"To have reached the end of the journey and have this concrete wall in front of me that you have to do something, and stop supporting your wife and risk breaking up your family because I have got two children aged 10 and 14 — just because the law says so —was extremely disheartening," Roz told ABC.

The change is a welcome one for queer and transgender support groups, with Australian Transgender Support Association Of Queensland (ATSAQ) Secretary Kristine Johnson calling it "the best news ever".

Katter's Australian Party (KAP) MPs as well as Pauline Hanson's One Nation MP Stephen Andrew voted against the change of this law.
