‘TransAthletica’ is nominated in the Best Use Of Vertical Video, Social category at the 27th Webby Awards, and as a nominee it’s also eligible to win a Webby People’s Voice Award, voted online by fans across the globe.
The show, created by the team behind Rainbow History Class, follows the story of Rudy Jean Rigg as they explore the unique challenges faced by trans people in sport. It asks questions like how do we define a person’s gender? What determines a ‘normal’ level of hormones? How can we change sport systems to be less gendered?
‘TransAthletica’ launched in 2022, during the Australian Federal Election period – a time when transgender inclusion in sport was a major election issue.

“Our series is ammunition in the fight for transgender rights on and off the field,” ‘TransAthletica’ Director/Co-Writer and Snack Drawer Co-Founder Hannah McElhinney says. “A Webby nomination could not come at a better time. We’re well aware we’re the underdog in this fight. Anyone going up against Jimmy Fallon is! But ‘TransAthletica’ is an underdog story, full of incredible underdog athletes who continue to play, even when the game is stacked against them. So in the spirit of the underdog, please help us win a Webby and vote.”
The Webbys, presented by The International Academy Of Digital Arts And Sciences, are the leading International awards organisation to honour excellence on the internet. The organisation is made up of industry experts such as Questlove, Tan France, Ziwe Fumudoh, Roxanne Gay, Natalie Guzman and more.
“Nominees like ‘TransAthletica’ are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” The Webby Awards President Claire Graves says. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 14,000 entries we received this year.”
Winners will be announced 25 April.
