The single was released in 2021, as part of the Northern Rivers artist's EP 'All Of Me'. . . A body of work displaying a darker side of an artist usually known for warmth and charisma.
It was written in Kid Heron's Brunswick apartment in Melbourne – written, Kid Heron says, almost as a form of therapy. . . A way to see things clearer after a pivotal moment in his life.
“I'd slept with a friend of mine, which led to me coming out to my friends and family, and it was during this time that I wrote this song to try to make sense of it all.”
“The aftermath for a while was confusing and challenging, and a little dark at times.
“It’s important to tell real stories from my life about being queer and coming out and all the messy stuff that I mostly don’t want to talk about.”
The track is laced with haunting, reverberated vocals met with rolling synths and orchestral elements throughout – capturing a silky, eerie, dream-like vibe.
Meanwhile, '4am''s new music video complements this – it's washed with pink tones, a sensual, soft and understated yet powerful experience, working perfectly in tandem with the track. FROOTY is thrilled to be able to share it a day early.
“I wanted the video clip to seem like a distorted and glitched memory, so we played around with editing techniques to really try and portray a sense of that throughout the clip.”
“It's the most raw and honest clip I've made and I hope that vulnerability comes across and people can feel that,” Kid Heron says.
The video walks the line between mystery and total revelation – it's a gripping few minutes sure to have viewers on the edge of their seats, trying to unravel what's going on.
Of course, it's rare that shooting a music video goes without any hiccups, and Kid Heron says there was a particularly chilling moment during production. . .
“It was shot in the middle of winter so it was freezing cold and I was naked filming the shower scene,” he reveals. “Towards the end, the hot water ran out and I had to do the last few takes standing under the cold water!”
Kid Heron is due to release his debut album, titled 'Fantasy', later this year.
The music video for '4am' is out on 1 April.
