Jake, as a non-binary, queer artist, is deeply influenced by their experiences with gender visibility and their advocacy for non-binary representation – and this brand-new track is an example of their innovative approach to music. . . As well as the profundity of turning a negative experience into something beautiful. . . Such is the origin of many a captivating and emotive art piece.
“I get lost in music. Writing takes me to another place, a safe space to breathe, where I can freely express. It feels so meditative and cozy,” Jake says. “While writing 'Yoofee', I was reflecting on how my bubble had just been burst that morning. . . Expressing myself through gender fluid clothing on my scheduled coffee run (wearing a pink-coloured baby tee that I looked hot AF in), was apparently contentious and I very reluctantly received a verbal blasting from two big men throttling their big ute.”
“I'll save myself the trouble of recounting exactly what they said here, but just know that it included many variations of them flexing their insecurities and revving their massive manly diesel ute that is quite obviously owned by them for compensation.”
“Positively, I understood that I shouldn't listen to what any one has to say about me as it's only their own lack of confidence at play, but the every-other-day occurrence of this happening to me had really taken its toll. That aside, 'Yoofee' is about how grateful I am for the people who appreciate me for who I am. While listening to the track, I'm sure you'll pick up on the emotions I've described here now.”
The track sparks intrigue as soon as it begins, but doesn't give you long to ponder before launching into a beautifully chaotic arrangement of keyboards, drums, and bass lines. There's plenty going on sonically – but it's presented in an intricately structured way, making the track easy to listen to despite its complexity.
FROOTY is super excited to present and premiere 'Yoofee' a day early. Enjoy.
“In general, my number one influence would have to be the incredible people I choose to be surrounded by. I take so much inspiration from people with drive and passion. And they don’t have to be musicians. I also promise I’m not an energy vampire.”
'Yoofee' is an unapologetically raw and energetic composition – a reflection of Jake's desire to break free from restrictive norms, and express a spectrum of identity through their art. Plus, it's a shimmering example of the power of music to convey a message and a feeling through music, even without any lyrics.
Jake discusses this.
“Music has a unique and profound ability to connect people on multiple levels, especially connecting queer communities together. Instrumental music offers a universal form of communication that can express what words often cannot. Instrumental music is deeply imbedded into our history as humans.”
“'Yoofee' blends the harmonic richness of nu-jazz with the rhythmic drive of hip hop, creating a sound that is both dense and dynamic. The track is propelled by high-energy drum breaks while seamlessly shifting into more nuanced, sensitive passages,” Jake describes of the track's composition. “Erica Tucceri's masterful flute solo weaves through the arrangement with a free-flowing spontaneity. Echoing the vibrant energy of Berlin’s jazz scene, which I experienced firsthand during my Euro summer travels last year, 'Yoofee' captures the essence of modern jazz – fluid, unpredictable, and bursting with life.”
“'Yoofee' as a composition is deeply personal to me, and attempts to balance moments of unrestrained expression with a subtle, meditative undercurrent. It seems that most people who identity with the non-binary label have experienced the universal challenges around gender visibility and acceptance. I have particularly struggled with gender dysphoria and with the discouragement from expressing my true self. My compositional process for 'Yoofee' was deeply influenced by my desire to break free from restrictive norms and express a spectrum of identity through my art. This track is a manifestation of my resilience and a celebration of my refusal to be confined by traditional gender roles.”
There's confrontation in the prospect of a song – which once resided as an idea in the brain of the artist before coming to life in the studio – finally hitting the ears of the public upon completion. As Jake prepares to share 'Yoofee', they talk about how they dream listeners will respond to the project.
“I hope people feel fierce, inspired, energetic. I hope people connect with my story and understand why I have written this song,” they say. “I hope people feel connected to this style and will discover more incredible music within this genre. I’m making the music that I want to hear, so hopefully someone out there vibes and also writes something similar!”
'Yoofee' is released 27 September. Jake Amy plays The Retreat Hotel (Brunswick) 27 September.
