The pop trailblazer’s new single is an instant Jake Shears anthem, feeling as much like a fresh start as a return to self. It’s an exhilarating introduction to Shears’ new album, featuring production from the likes of Boys Noise and Vaughn Oliver, with a head-turning guest list of collaborations: Kylie Minogue, Big Freedia and Amber Martin all feature, and there’s even a few extra cameos from Jane Fonda and Iggy Pop.
“’Last Man Dancing’ is my ultimate house party. Presented in two distinct halves, it chronicles a night’s journey from sing-along dance anthems into the deeper, darker corners of my living room,” Jake says of the album.
“Electro-pop, tech-house, poppers-fueled disco, it’s MY afters and YOU just got the address. We can be as loud and late as we want. . . And while not everyone might make it to the end, it’s the last ones dancing who are rewarded with the most magical moments of the evening.”
Just last year, Scissor Sisters’ debut album was named the UK’s twelfth biggest-selling debut LP of all time. Jake has continued to shape-shift, releasing a memoir, performing on Broadway, and releasing music of his own throughout his career.
The music video for ‘Too Much Music’, the album’s first sample, is directed by Callum Macdiarmid, seeing Jake in suitably subversive form, with cinematic – and unexpected – results.
‘Too Much Music’ is out now. The album ‘Last Man Dancing’ is out 2 June.
