Break-up purgatory is a weird place to be. You’re ready to move on, but you haven’t quite closed the door. That’s where Darcy is in this track – neither here nor there. . . And ‘Lonely’ is a musical cutting of ties.
Break-ups are rarely ever simple and straightforward. Most people who have experienced one can probably relate to the themes in Darcy’s lyrics – you’ve spent hours perfectly curating the perfect selection of photos for your dating profile. They make you look good, but also normal and approachable. . . But you can’t help but keep messaging your ex.
“A clear, queer undertone for me in this song is the sapphic-specific tendency to stay close with your ex long after a break up,” Darcy says. “But this song is really for anyone who’s kept one foot in the past and another in their future.”
The atmospheric, reverb-y beginning eventually moves into a toe-tapping chorus driven by layers of guitars, drums and tambourine.
“I came with so many possible references for this track – it was hard to know which direction to take it. Curtis and I tried around five different mixes before we nailed it. For a hot second, it was almost a melancholic, Phoebe Bridgers vibe, but we landed firmly in alt-pop.”
‘Lonely’ gives the listener an in-depth look at Darcy’s emotional tug-of-war.
“I’m meeting people / And I’m having fun / But there’s something missing / ‘Cause I can’t let go / Of the love you gave me / But I want to though”
“I wrote this song, and internally closed the door on my past, then immediately met my now wife,” Darcy reflects. “So I’m not saying that listening will help you find the one, but I’m not not saying that either.”
‘Lonely’ is out now. Darcy’s sophomore album will be out in mid-2023.
