Review: Skank Sinatra @ Fringe World Perth 2024

Stunningly raunchy, fiercely clever and outrageously funny, Jens Radda (ABC TV) returns to Perth for the stylised world premiere of 'Skank Sinatra' at the Ellington Jazz Club for Fringe Festival 2024.

Skank Sinatra

Melbourne-based, South African-born, and internationally studied drag performer and comedian, Radda brings a breath of fresh air to the drag scene, combining musical theatre and cabaret expertise to a night of frivolity.

Taking to the stage as Skank Sinatra, the performance is semi-autobiographical with skilled narration, and musical numbers that draw the audience along for the ride.

Featuring hits from modern artists, and some numbers sung in different languages, ‘Skank Sinatra’ is as genre-bending as it is fluid. Radda’s strength with crowd interaction had all audience members laughing, and even when things weren’t going to script, Radda’s skill and technique made quick work of recovery.

SkankSinatra 2

‘Skank Sinatra’ was everything you want and expect in a Fringe performance: sexy, sultry, and seductive – with humour, political statements, observations, and tongue-in-(butt)cheek humour. ‘Skank Sinatra’ has life outside of the festival circuit – entertaining both LGBTQIA+ and ally audiences.

As a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and having studied Clowning with Philippe Gaulier (Paris) and Vocal Technique at the Complete Vocal Institute (Copenhagen), Jens Radda is a veritable triple threat, primed and pampered for a prominent drag future. . . Perhaps even returning to television – I wouldn’t be surprised!
