“Young at heart, old everywhere else …” Nanna Bingo brings a theatrical element to what audiences might not expect from a night of bingo, and bohemian rhapsody. But who is Nanna at her core? Aesthetically, she evokes Yetta Rosenberg from the 90’s sitcom, ‘The Nanny’; while sounding like a blender full of nails, packaged with the mannerisms of Patsy Stone from ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ – with this in mind, Nanna Bingo is full of nostalgic hot takes, peppered with witty one-liners and long-form set-ups that really pack a punch.
The man behind the woman, Stuart Hayward, is a Kiwi performer that now proudly calls Perth (Western Australia) home. Hayward has performed in countless shows throughout Australia, including ‘Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert’ (Platinum Entertainment), ‘Bogan Shakespeare’, and is most known for his work as cabaret host and comedian, Sam Madame.
Keeping up with Nanna is a performance in and of itself – from crowd interaction, intelligent set-ups and quick-witted ad-lib, Nanna Bingo brings variety to the recycled format. DJ sets, costumes encouraged by attendees, rave lighting, and a barrel of cackles – you’ve never quite seen a show like this before.
Krampt Theatre is set to bring Nanna to the masses, during the 2024 season of Perth Fringe World at Jester’s Court (Fantasia, Perth Town Hall). From hilarity to hip-replacements, be sure to grab your tickets for their inaugural festival launch – but maybe leave your grandkids at home!
