The Star is teaming up with comedy superstar Joel Creasey to feature local rising stand-up stars. It’s a casting call for a ‘Camp Comedy’ show, taking place in early 2023.
This August, The Star bars in Sydney and the Gold Coast will be transformed for a one-night-only open-mic experience that invites amateur comedians from across the country to vie for a place on Joel Creasey’s ‘Camp Comedy’ line-up.
“To give the scene a fabulous shot of adrenaline, in collaboration with one of our nation’s leaders in entertainment – The Star, I wanted to develop a show that gives a chance (and a microphone) to the comedy voices you may not have heard from before; supporting Australia’s next generation of comedy talent,” Joel Creasey says.
Joel has found that while diversity and inclusion is on the rise, tackling for your first gig as a queer person can certainly be daunting.
Wannabe stand-ups from across New South Wales and Queensland will be able to take the stage alongside Joel, for a five-minute set. The prize? An opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the country’s best comedians – who will also feature on the line-up – and, of course, bragging rights.
Those on the hunt for laughs are invited too – to cheer on the rising stars and indulge in mid-week entertainment.
“I hated school camp. So ‘Camp Comedy’ sounds far more up my alley,” Joel says. “Especially because I can do it with a drink in hand. It’s for everyone however, so no matter how you identify, we’d love to have you on board.”
The casting call takes place at 7pm on 3 August (The Star Gold Coast) and 7pm on 4 August (The Star Sydney).
