The digital comedy creator, known for chucking tantrums over his petty gripes, has amassed millions of views for his content, plus he's grown a loyal listenership from podcast 'Is It Just Me?' and formerly 'Trash Alley'.
Now comes his new stand-up show 'Water Off A Duck's Clit' – named after Mitchell's recent new way of looking at things and letting things go. . . But of course, ranting hasn't been banished. Some small stuff is worth sweating. In this show, Mitchell will explore the challenges of choosing your battles, leaving grudges in the past, and finding humour in the dark.
He'll play Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival.
In light of the recent devastating news of beloved music retailer Sanity shutting its doors across the country – and, coincidentally on-theme with his show's idea of letting things go. . . Mitchell lists five of his most memorable purchases from the iconic one-stop single and album shop.
“You might’ve heard the news that CD/DVD retailer Sanity have closed the last two stores they had remaining in Australia (both located in Queensland, which was also home to the last remaining Bi-Lo store. . . Always a bit behind on the times, god love ‘em).
At their peak, Sanity had over 200 stores. They also had my heart. As a camp and closeted little farm kid, Sanity was my place of worship. I would muster up all the pocket money I could and look forward to the 90-minute drive to the nearest store in Orange, New South Wales.
Here are five of my most memorable purchases.”
One
'Bob The Builder: The Album'. This, quite simply, slapped. There are very few song covers that outshine the originals, but Bob The Builder’s renditions of 'Mambo No. 5' and 'Crocodile Rock' are just outstanding. I played this CD so much to death that it was scratched beyond repair, so my parents had to buy a second copy from Sanity to stop 5-year-old Mitchell’s tears of distress.
Two
Avril Lavigne: 'Sk8er Boi' (single). One day I was swimming at the public pool and found a total of $7 in coins at the bottom. Did I do the honest thing and hand them into lost and found? Nuh, off to Sanity I went to buy Avril Lavigne’s newie. I could only afford this single, not the full album, but I still felt like I’d won lotto.
Three
'So Fresh: The Hits Of Winter 2004'. This will always be the elite 'So Fresh' compilation CD. None of their others will ever compare, nor will anything 'NOW' ever offered up ('So Fresh'’s much more basic rival). It kicks off with Anastacia’s ‘Left Outside Alone’ and flows effortlessly into Shannon Noll’s ‘Drive’. Then throw in some Jessica Simpson, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears. . . I mean, so eclectic and gorgeous.
Four
My Chemical Romance: 'The Black Parade'. I think everyone unanimously went through their emo phase when this came out, because 'Welcome To The Black Parade' goes off at parties to this day.
Five
Lady Gaga: 'The Fame Monster'. This CD was my “reward” for “being brave” when I had to travel to Orange for Crohn's disease surgery at age 14. And yes, the trip to Sanity did make the profuse diarrhoea worth it.
Vale, Sanity. . . And EB Games – Godspeed.
Mitchell Coombs plays The Comic's Lounge (Melbourne International Comedy Festival) 14-15 April, and Factory Theatre (Sydney Comedy Festival) 17 and 19 May.
