Rhys Nicholson Confronted By Homophobes On Melbourne Train

Comedian Rhys Nicholson has spoken out about a recent experience on a Melbourne train where he was confronted by a group of people who verbally attacked him.

Rhys was on a train on the way to one of his shows when he was told "If there was no one here, I'd bash you to death".

One of the men apparently said "you can always spot a faggot in Melbourne".

"He wasn't in my face, but that was more terrifying," Rhys told the Canberra Times. "They were just well-dressed, regular people."

Rhys got off the train to report the incident and luckily wasn't physically harmed by then.

"It's great that we have [same-sex marriage] now, but I feel like it's also not a time to rest on our laurels. So much more that needs to be done."

He's right! It's 2018. We've come a long way, but there's still a road ahead of us when it comes to being a more open and accepting society. The 'yes' result was a pivotal moment in Australia's history but Rhys' experience just goes to show it hasn't changed everyone's mind.

Just last month this writer was inspecting a gated community in search of an apartment when I was called a faggot by one of the residents! And a young adult male resident, at that!

This incident seems to be happening a lot less than it once did, but let's use it as a wake up call to realise this fight is far from over.
