The performer, who stormed the ‘Eurovision’ stage with her hit ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’, was forced to publicly reveal her HIV status and recently told BBC that it’s still hard for her to be taken seriously.
“I feel I need to prove myself each and every time [because] I’m a drag act,” she said. “I want to be clear this is not a joke.”
Conchita was created in 2006 as a drag alter ego of Tom Neuwirth. She told scenestr that it was a way to project confidence: “After collecting these experiences over the years I found, for me, the best way and the best truth to be able to have a life on stage.”
Last month, she made a personal post on Instagram detailing her experience with HIV. “An ex-boyfriend threatens me to go public with this information, and I will not give anyone the right to frighten me and influence my life in the future,” she said.
She went on to write about how it’s easier for her to admit it than for it to be revealed by someone else, saying “coming out is better than being outed”.
Australian drag performer Courtney Act – a close friend to Conchita – recently spoke to Bang Showbiz about the situation.
“[It] has been a non-issue for Conchita,” she said. “It’s really important for a lot of people out there who are either living with HIV and suffering from the stigma surrounding it.”
